RECYCLING RESOLUTIONS FOR 2022

New year, new beginnings. It’s the start of 2022 and time for resolutions. This year instead of focusing inward – I’ll lose 10 lbs, I’ll work out more, I’ll be more patient. What if we made resolutions that will affect our recycling behavior and create some lasting eco-friendly habits. Here are our top 5 recycling resolutions.

TAKE A STEP TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS

Since carbon emissions are directly responsible for global warming, anything we can do to reduce the emissions should be a focus in 2022. C2ES, The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, reports that transportation accounts for 29% of the world’s carbon emissions. However, if commuters change their commuting patterns and increase the use of public transportation the emissions could be drastically reduced. Of course, many of us are still working at home, which helps in the battle against carbon emissions, as does the halt in business travel. So, when it’s possible, commute at off times, take the train to work, or even better, put your sneakers on and walk or cycle to the office.

FROM GARBAGE TO GARDEN

Compost adds nutrients to the soil and aids in photosynthesis. It also introduces beneficial organisms that can repel plant disease. The short story? Composting decreases the amount of waste generated by each household, reducing the trash in the landfill. By using compost in our gardens, we can avoid harmful pesticides and fertilizers. Why grow the landfill when you can grow flowers?

HEALTHY PLANET HEALTHY YOU

Commit to zero waste take-out options. This doesn’t mean that you have to avoid your morning coffee but try to remember your travel mug. When you have to take out, ask the restaurant to prepare your food “for here,” then pack it in glass or stainless steel containers. Whenever possible, bring your lunch from home. Eating leftovers is a great way to avoid food waste, packaging and most of the time, it’s a healthier option. Sustaining the planet is good for you!

RESPONSIBLE FASHION LOOKS GOOD ON YOU!

Last month we focused our blog on the pitfalls of fast fashion. Our dependence on convenient clothes has led to 62 million metric tons of apparel being consumed each year globally. This puts a strain on the earth’s natural resources, substantially increases carbon emissions, and pollutes our groundwater with chemical waste and harmful microplastics. What if we resolved in 2022 to buy fewer new clothes. Try shopping the thrift stores; this is a great way to get a deal on designer brands that you may not have purchased at retail price. Vintage is right on trend; as you rescue that Missoni sweater from the landfill, you are upping your fashion game.

REHOME BEFORE YOU RECYCLE

E-Waste is one of the trickier recycling mysteries. Just what do we do with electronics that are nearing the end of their useful life. In a world where smartphones and computers get updated every couple of years, E-waste in our landfills has skyrocketed. So, in 2022 pause before putting electronics in your curbside recycling and instead consider rehoming. Often, electronics are still useful even when disposed of; why not give them away to someone who could use them and help prevent e-waste. There are multiple services in the marketplace that will collect used electronics, wipe the hard drives, and distribute them for free or at a reduced cost to people who need them.

Let’s carry these recycling resolutions all the way through 2022!
